Hi, Here´s a tutorial of carving a Bigfoot. I got the main idea from  Four Oaks Craft´s  Stephen Johnson´s Youtube video entitled  "Carving Bigfoot", but adapted it to my own version. Have fun, Dave.

Checking the thickness.

Now make all the stop cuts except at the knees. The horizontal lines at the knees are not for stop cuts. They only serve as orientation for marking the curves of the legs.

Jetzt die ganze Stopcuts außer am Knie schneiden. Die horizontalen Linien am Knie sind nur Orientierungsmarkierungen, für das Markieren der Kurven an den Beinen.

A small slant at the forehead.

V-cuts between face and mane.

V-schnitte zwischen Gesicht und Mähne.

Freeing the nose.

Die Nase befreien.

Mark the middle of the teeth, make stop cuts and cut a small triangle out of the 4 upper corners.

Mittellinie der Zähne markieren, Stopcuts machen und kleine Dreiecke der 4 Ecken ausschneiden.

V-cut on the entire mouth area.

V-schnitt im ganzen Mundbereich.

Mark the lines between the teeth.

Die Linien zwischen die Zähne markieren.

After stop cutting, make V-cuts between the teeth, then take a tiny chip off all four corners of each tooth to give it that real toothy grin.

Stopcuts machen, gefolgt von V-schnitte zwischen die Zähne. Zum Schluß, kleine Dreiecken von alle 4 Ecken aller Zähne abschneiden, um dieses tollen Grinsen zu verleihen.

Round off top of mane.

Obere Mähne abrunden

V-cut on lower mane.

V-schnitt an der unteren Mähne.

Round off the schoulders and make V-cuts between arms and body.

Schultern abrunden,dann V-schnitte zwischen Arme und Körper.

V-cut the hands.

Round off upper chest towards mane.

Oberen Brustbereich richtung Mähne abrunden.

Form lower chest and upper belly.

Free and form the hands.

Mark the fingers, then make Stop cuts and V-cuts.

Fingern markieren, dann Stopcuts und Vschnitte.

Form the legs.

Beine formen.

Make V-cuts at top and front of the feet.

V-schnitte am oberen und vorderen Fußbereich.

Mark the toes with stopcuts and V-cuts.

I always go back over the entire carving and make shallow stop cuts into all the creases. This allows the oil to seep in deeper which produces more contrast in the finished carving.

Kleine Stopcuts in alle Falten ermöglicht, dass das öl tiefer einziehen kann, und bringt mehr kontrast im fertigen Figure.

As an experiment, I dunked this carving into coffee to see if I would like the darker tone.

Als Experiment, habe ich die Figure in´s  Kaffee gedunkt, um zu sehen, ob mir die dunklerer Farbe gefällt.

I let the coffee completely dry before applying the walnut oil.

Ich habe den Kaffee komplet trocknen lassen, vorm einpinseln mit Walnussöl.

Insert magnet into the hole with knife, pull knife across like spreading butter on bread. This wil position the magnet perfectly flush with the surface of the wood.

Magnet ins Loch mit messer stecken, Messer herunterziehen wie Butter auf´s Brot schmieren. Der Magnet ist jetzt genau eben mit der Oberfläche vom Holz.

Here you can see the difference between just walnut oil ( left ) and walnut oil after Coffe staining ( right ), and although I like the coffee color I don´t like what happened to the surface structure. It became fuzzy and blurry. So I won´t be coffee staining in the future.

Hier kann man den Unterschied zwischen nur Walnußöl ( links ) und Walnußöl nach der Kaffeebehandlung ( rechts ). Die Kaffeefarbe gefällt mir schon, aber die Oberfläche wurde mat und unscharf. In der Zukunft werde ich keine Kaffeebehanlungen mehr machen.
